Penrose Tiles were the first aperiodic tile to be discovered, by Sir Roger Penrose. I sent a copy of the first version to him, and he kindly wrote back that it was the best tessellation based on his tiling that he had seen. There are several “flavours” of the Penrose Tiling. This artwork is based on a substitution process where you never get more than two of the small fish together.

At different distances from this work, you can see lines and triangles within the tiling, which appear in different sizes. These are artefacts of the fractal nature of the tile. The triangles are known as Robinson Triangles, and the lines are known as Ammann Bars, two interesting aspects of this amazing tiling, and named after the mathematicians who first described them.

This is a part of the “Full House” series, a collection of special works from my research that don’t fit into the exhibition series but are nonetheless very interesting. They are very large, taking up almost the full sheet. They are signed together with a custom hand applied seal in the bottom right corner of the artwork, so they can be framed with a mount up to the image boundary, if desired, as the signature doesn’t extend into the border.
