This design is based on Penrose Tiling, the first aperiodic tiling to be described.
The pattern is inspired by the art of Batuan village in Bali, which has a very particular style of ink drawing combined with ink tones, which is very mysterious and dreamlike. I have been interested in this school of art, since doing research on it for our project in Bali, the Alila Villas Uluwatu, where we commissioned art from the village for the hotel.
The hand drawing and ink tones are a magician’s trick to distract the eye, the real subject of the artwork is the system that organizes these elements, and this system appears at a distance of around 1-2m from the artwork. At this viewing distance the patterns evoke swirling lines like knotted cords, and appear to writhe and twist.
This is a part of the “Full House” series, a collection of special works from my research that don’t fit into the exhibition series but are nonetheless very interesting. They are very large, taking up almost the full sheet. They are signed together with a custom hand applied seal in the bottom right corner of the artwork, so they can be framed with a mount up to the image boundary, if desired, as the signature doesn’t extend into the border.
